Gina McAdam is an Artist, Printmaker and Illustrator who works from her studio in Godalming. She has just started selling a range of her printed products from her website and in the Yard Market in Godalming town centre. She also works as an art educator in a variety of different venues. She is also a friend of mine and we’ve worked together freelancing at Watt’s Gallery.
Sketchbook Club was started as somewhere that people could go to experiment with different styles, materials and techniques in an informal setting. We also get to benefit from Gina’s guidance, ideas and expertise. No art experience is necessary to join, so it’s a lovely place to relax and make art.
Based now in Gina’s studio, we have a different theme each session. It’s always great to walk in on Sunday morning and see a still life set up with taxidermy squirrels or some peacock feathers placed behind a blind or a box of beads and wires. Gina’s ideas are endless. Some sessions, we go outside and draw. We spent one session in Cafe Mila, another by the river and one in a graveyard.
There are now a small group of regulars, all with different styles. I’m very much a splodger – lots of paint splats and mess. One of the others is really neat, focussing on lots of detail. The themes are very broad and there is no pressure to even follow the theme.
As well as drawing and painting, we’ve done different methods of printmaking, collage, dry point printmaking and make trinket fairy lights.
For me, it is a wonderful way to spend a Sunday morning and I find it so relaxing to have so much artistic freedom. Graphic Design involves working to briefs to create an end product, so it’s nice to not have that pressure (although I do find I need to come away with something I’m happy with. I get teased for this!). I enjoy having the different themes and learning new techniques to help me focus.
Sketchbook Club is having a break for the summer but details of the club can be found on this Facebook page.
