Volunteering at Arthouse Unlimited
Arthouse Unlimited are a charity who work with adults with complex epilepsy and with a range of learning difficulties from The Meath. These artists are guided by art instructors who help turn their artwork into different products. The original paintings are also for sale and we own a couple of small portraits. Their shop and office is based on the high street in Godalming.
They have a team of volunteers who assist the staff with a range of different tasks. Packaging the online orders, sticking labels on products, working in the shop, assisting the artists, tidying, whatever needs doing at the time.
I chose to volunteer as I really like the work that is produced by the artists and the idea behind the charity. I help for 4 hours on Wednesdays, while my daughter is at nursery.
So far, every Wednesday has been different and I’ve been working on a variety of different tasks, including helping out with the window displays. As I only started after Christmas, so I haven’t had a chance to get to know the artists yet but they are a friendly bunch and often tell me about what they’re working on. They are always so full of enthusiasm for what they’re doing and it feels a great honour to hear the thought process behind the art.
Personally, I have benefitted greatly from volunteering and I would encourage others to do the same. The shop is definitely worth a visit at 96 High street, Godalming but all products are also on the website. The soaps smell lovely and the chocolate is really tasty. You may buy something I have stuck a label on!
